For a Fashion PR girl like me, that means that I get to go on the internet and look at the clothes that my favorite modern starlets were wearing today.
And honestly, I was disappointed.
I don't use this word often, but ugly is the word I would use to describe most of the fashion at the VMA's this year.
I can understand art in fashion, but I just didn't see it for this red carpet event.
Not only that, but most of the clothing worn by the women was extremely revealing. I understand that most of the world does not follow the values of modesty that I choose to uphold. I get that. I understand that in Hollywood that there are many types of people with many different values and standards. I get that.
But I still do not like seeing women reveal a lot of their bodies, especially on a formal occasion. I would argue that, as a woman, the more skin you show, the less power you have.
That is not because we live in a patriarchal society or because I believe that women should be ashamed of their bodies. It's quite the opposite, actually. I think women should respect themselves enough to know that they shouldn't have to show off so much skin to stand out. Women should know that their beauty will shine through more when they wear clothing to respect their bodies, and respect those who see them.
But of course, there were a few outfits that I loved and are imitation-worthy!
Solange Knowles is wearing a classic pant suit with a modern twist. I love the shape of the blazer with the pants- the slim pants and a jacket with very straight lines are flattering on her figure. The slim pants balance out the volume from the jacket. It reminds me of early sixties fashion...
like this one! I'm not sure what year this is from, or who created these pieces. If you know, let me know in the comments! :) It's a very elegant look that is flattering on Solange's and this model's slim frames.
Chloe Grace Moretz absolutely KILLED IT in this outfit. This one is probably/definitely my favorite out of all of them. She paired pink and red seemingly effortlessly. She looks very mature and beautiful. The straight trousers and embellished top are age appropriate and the silver belt is just the right touch. It reminds me of...
...seventies fashion! I don't love all of seventies fashion, but I like how they wore their trousers with long sleeves. It reminds me of the 1970s Charlie's Angels. Who doesn't want to grow up to look like Farrah Fawcett or Jaclyn Smith, am I right?
I was pleasantly surprised with Kesha's choice of clothing for the VMA's. This dress flatters her beautiful hourglass figure, and is covered in embellishments much like...
Marilyn Monroe's dress she wore to sing "Happy Birthday" to President Kennedy! She wore this in the early sixties. I love the fact that a star today wore something so closely resembling one of my all-time favorite actresses.
Well, those are my favorite outfits for this year's VMA's. Don't you love how classic vintage pieces always seem to come full circle?
I do!
Until next time,
xoxo Miranda
