Elizabeth Taylor in Taming of the Shrew, 1967

I just saw Taming of the Shrew this past week. It was so good, you guys! Even if you don't like Shakespeare, I would recommend it. Elizabeth Taylor is a fantastic actress. Richard Burton is a great actor, too. You can't beat the classic Elizabeth and Richard chemistry.

The premise of the play is this: Elizabeth plays this crazy sister that nobody will marry because she's super mean, but her really pretty little sister has lots of suitors. Their father won't let the little sister get married until Catherine, (Elizabeth), is married, so he has to find a suitor for her. Turns out their father is very wealthy, and an ambitious young man rises to the challenge to "tame" her. This is the part where it gets a little iffy, because he basically is pretty mean to her to make her submissive. It works though, because at the end of the movie, the sister has her own wedding and everyone comes back to see how Catherine is doing. The men have a contest to see who the most obedient wife is, and  Catherine wins as the most obedient wife.

Okay, I promise it is way better than that. Shakespeare wrote it. Just go watch it.

I was trying to play off the vibrant colors of Elizabeth Taylor's costumes in the play. I also like her messy curly hair.

In other news, I just went to Salt Lake this weekend and I think I'm in love. I've never had this feeling before!

Okay, okay, I know, what you're saying. I know. "Miranda, you said you would never move to Utah ever. I remember your tone!"

I know. And I have been sufficiently humbled. Although I don't see myself ever moving anywhere other than Salt Lake. The city is so beautiful. I've been there before, but I didn't really see the potential before. It's such a beautiful city. Most cities are kind of dirty and scary. Salt Lake is still kind of scary but it's so CLEAN. And the City Creek Mall is right next to the temple. And you can see the Capitol Building right on top of the hill! It is so pretty.

In other news, Fashion Week is this way! Stay tuned for a review from yours truly :)

Also, I am currently obsessed with this Blossom Dearie. I'm listening to this song right now.

Saks Fifth Avenue PR Problem

WARNING: If you have no interest in business or Public Relations, you will NOT enjoy reading this post. Instead, you can just go shopping here. (A 75% off sale, whaaaat!?)

You guys, I know that it's been over a week since I've posted an outfit about Old Hollywood. And I'm sorry! I tried to do one yesterday, I really did. But I figure I can write other stuff on my blog too, right?

If you've been following me or if you know me at all, you may know that this is the first semester that I actually like my classes. NOT THAT I DIDN'T LIKE THEM BEFORE, but these ones are more involved in what I am interested in.

One, in particular, is called PR Principles and Practices. It's a lot of reading and discussions. But one thing we do is write a blog post every week about something going on in the PR world and we discuss it. Mine is here.

It's not necessarily an exciting blog, so I apologize for not wowing you with amazing content or a creative design. I really just have it for my classes. This blog right here is my real passion.

However, today I discussed a PR problem in one of my favorite companies: Saks Fifth Avenue.

The gist of the situation is this: Saks Fifth Avenue is being sued by a transgender woman for firing her on the grounds of sex discrimination. The owner made an extremely insensitive comment by saying that "transexuals are not a protected class." Now, he is backtracking and saying that Saks supports the LGBT community.

You guys, I LOVE Saks Fifth Avenue. The brand is about luxury and class and elegance. That is why is it such a shame that this happened.

They are going to need some serious PR to clean this up. Not because Saks is a bad brand that doesn't support its employees, but this is an unfortunate situation in a specific Saks location. The CEO also needs to be informed that the company's reputation is the most important thing.

I think if I were working on the PR Team for Saks, I would probably have the brand implement some stricter rules regarding tolerance toward the LGBT community. I'd also have the CEO make some more statements about how the company regrets that this incident happened.

I'm sure there is a lot more that could be done, but I'm still learning. It's only about three weeks into the semester, after all.

I'm probably going to keep you guys posted on this. I'll let you know how it resolves.

Golden Globes, 2015

Did you guys watch the Golden Globes this Sunday?

Unfortunately, I did not. I had some company this weekend so I didn't turn on the television. But that is one reason that I LOVE the internet so much! All the things I want to see are just a few clicks away!

Without further ado, here is my Best Dressed List for the Academy Awards:

I really admire Felicity Jones' choice of dress. It is beautiful and it hangs well. She is wearing Christian Dior.
I LOVE Jessica Chastain's dress by Altier Versace because it reminds me so much of a dress Marilyn Monroe wore for a photoshoot.

Amy Adams looks gorgeous in a powder blue Versace gown. It is very flattering on her figure.
Lena Dunham has caught fire recently in the fashion industry. She is wearing Zac Posen (my favorite designer).
I just love Emma Stone. Honestly, I'll put her on the Best Dressed List for her hair every time. Have you seen her hair!? It's gorgeous! Definitely new hair goals for 2015. She is wearing Lanvin.
Kerry Washing is obviously one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Here she is wearing Mary Katrantzou.
Anna Kendrick seems to be mirroring her role as Cinderella in Into the Woods on the red carpet. The color of the dress looks so beautiful on her skin tone. It is by Monique Lhuillier.
Julienne Moore reminds me so much of a mermaid in this sparkly Givenchy gown (in a good way)!

Lillian Gish, circa 1922

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you The First Lady of American Cinema.

She was the leading role in the highest grossing film of the Silent Era, Griffith's Birth of a Nation (1915).

She continued to act until 1987, where she acted opposite Bette Davis (one of my favorites), in The Whales of August.

This outfit was clearly the beginning of the 1920's.

To be honest, I wasn't feeling a full-on gloves and hat and coat and encroachments on everything today. It seemed a like a little too much. So I just used some of the style principles, like layering and long lines that are classic 1920's.

This is my second week of school here at BYU-Idaho. I'm really looking forward to a fresh start, and hopefully some more sleep!

I had a great weekend. One of my past roommates, Alicia came up and she stayed the weekend with me. It was so fun although we didn't do anything besides shop and watch Friends (which, by the way, is a great show). She is incredibly wise beyond her years and she was really able to help me with some stuff I'm going through.

Honestly, I'd probably live the weekend over again. Although I really like school. I think my favorite class so far is my Advertising class, surprisingly. I didn't see that one coming. Now I have an extensive knowledge about the advertising history of Coca-Cola and I really thought that was the coolest thing I've learned since starting the semester. Did you know that they named it Coca-Cola because they thought the two C's would look good for advertising? Or that they used to put the word "Drink" on the advertisements so people would know it was a beverage?

Trust me. There's more where that came from.

Anyway, I routinely post updates about my blog on the Instagrams, Facebook, and Twitter. Follow me if your heart so desires.

Have a good week!

Katharine Hepburn, circa 1940's

Who doesn't love a photo of Katharine Hepburn with a leopard?

Straight class.

I honestly don't know the story behind this picture. Does anyone know? If you know, I would love for you to tell me. Was it a promotional movie photo? A modeling shot? I don't know! All I know is this is a great picture.

The details for this outfit are pretty straightforward. The leopard print gloves match the leopard in the picture, and I am wearing a shawl collared coat similar to Ms. Hepburn.

I absolutely adore the elegance that a huge collar brings. It draws all of the attention up to your face, like a frame. Camel colored coats are also very in vogue at this moment. They're very chic.

And of course, I couldn't go without my cat watch.

Meow.

For my Communications major, I am working on the campus newspaper. I'm working in the News part of the newspaper (as opposed to Sports, Arts & Entertainment, Campus, etc.). I'm kind of stressing because I need three different interviews and that means that I have to come up with interview questions. I also have to write in AP style, which is way different than the MLA format that I grew up using.

Despite this, I'm actually kind of excited for it. When I took the Writing for Communications class, I remember that my favorite part was interviewing people when we went to Yellowstone as a class. Maybe this will be similar?

Anyway, if any of you guys have story ideas, LET ME KNOW.

I'm hoping that I get to write a lot about crime. I know that sounds weird, but I've been watching a lot of Criminal Minds lately and although I think it is awful, it is definitely interesting to read. Does that make me weird?

Happy friday!

Holiday Inn, 1942

Happy holidays, everyone!

It's good to be back. In case you were wondering, I had a lot of stuff going on the end of the year. I had: the end of my internship, finals for my online classes, the end of working (so I tried to work as much as I could), and my family coming over to visit.

Fortunately, though, I am back at school and we are back in business!

Anyone who knows me quite well (which is admittedly, very few people), will know that my all-time favorite Christmas movie is Holiday Inn

This movie is very underrated. I don't think people talk about it enough. Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire both star in it. Crosby leaves show business to open an inn that is only open on holidays, and he and Astaire both fall for the same woman who works there. It is so fun!

There is no particular look that I chose to recreate in this movie. I just liked the overall elegance and wholesomeness that is associated with the 1940's. Especially the red lip. Gosh, I love a red lip.

You guys. I am so excited about my classes this semester. I'm taking a bunch of Communications classes and a Textiles class. I'm going to learn how to SPIN on a SPINNING WHEEL. What? Apparently they just keep one in the building. It's just sitting back there.

The other Communications classes seem really interesting, too. They are going to be very applicable for my dream gig, which is to be a buyer for a really nice department store. For those of you who don't know, a buyer is the person who chooses and buys the merchandise that is sold in a store, or anywhere else. They have to keep up on the trends and make correct predictions of what will sell.

I also applied for a Nordstrom's Internship that will be during the summertime. If you ask me, I would LOVE to work for Nordstrom. They are one of the leading fashion companies in the world and they are on the Top 100 list of companies to work for. I'm really excited.

Also, in case you're wondering, the watch I am wearing IS in fact a cat. It has ears and whiskers. You can find it at Charming Charlie's.

And I did cut my hair. I cut it off. It wasn't a trim. No. It was a CHOP. It took me a while to get used to it, but I really like it now. You know, it's funny how many emotions are tied to a woman's hair. Men don't experience the same emotional bonds with their hair. It is so freeing to be able to say: "I can still be a feminine woman with short hair. My hair does not change my femininity." Although, I would say that I feel prettier with this short hair. So basically I love it.

I was going to show you guys some pictures of the snow, but it hasn't snowed yet. Not that I'm complaining, I'm much more comfortable driving on pavement than straight ice. But it will snow this weekend, and I'll be sure to keep you updated on what my life looks like.

Have a good first week of 2015! DO NOT forget about your New Year Resolutions! Although I already have, so hey, who am I to judge.
